Long before chatbots began writing poems, helping students study, or generating artwork in seconds, artificial intelligence lived behind closed doors inside universities, military systems, laboratories, banking systems, and early computer science research.

The story of AI begins in the 1950s.

In 1956, researchers gathered at the Dartmouth Conference, where computer scientist John McCarthy helped establish the term “Artificial Intelligence.” The early dream was both ambitious and unsettling: could machines learn to simulate human reasoning, logic, problem solving, and decision-making?

Even military systems adopted AI decades ago. The U.S. military’s Dynamic Analysis and Replanning Tool (DART) helped optimize transportation logistics and supply movement, saving millions of dollars through intelligent planning systems.

Artificial intelligence has been quietly shaping the modern world for far longer than most people realize.

What Changed in 2022?

Accessibility changed everything.

Public-facing generative AI suddenly allowed ordinary people to:

But behind those moments are enormous data centers filled with high-performance computers running continuously. Those servers generate immense heat. And heat requires cooling.

Which means AI systems consume staggering amounts of:

Recent reports estimate that U.S. data centers consumed roughly 176 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2023 alone, enough to power approximately 16 million homes. Some experts believe AI-driven data centers could eventually consume 10% to 20% of U.S. electricity demand if growth continues unchecked.

  • Am I learning?
  • Am I creating?
  • Or am I simply generating?

The healthiest relationship with AI still leaves room for:

AI Is Not Good or Evil

Artificial intelligence itself is not inherently good or evil. It reflects:

  • the intentions of the people building it
  • the data it learns from
