Names that crossed countries, survived changing times, and somehow continued until they eventually became part of my own story.

But genealogy only gives us so much. A record may tell us when someone was born. It may tell us who they married.

Sometimes it tells us where they lived or what trade they practiced. But it rarely tells us who they loved. What frightened them. What they dreamed about. What they fought over. Or what they chose to pass down to the children who came after them.

That is where this story began.

When Jacques Talemann first sees a woman kneeling in a rain-soaked Antwerp street, gathering a stranger’s spilled catch of fish with her bare hands, he knows before she has said a single word that she is the one he means to marry.

The Story Behind the Story

This book began with my family tree. Like many people who begin researching their ancestry, I started with names.

• Parents.
• Grandparents.
• Great-grandparents.

Then the names began taking me farther back. Across states. Across countries. Across oceans.

Eventually, I found myself looking at people who had lived hundreds of years before I was born.

And I began asking the question that genealogy cannot always answer.

• Who were they?
• Not just when they were born.
• Not just who they marry.
• Who were they when no one was writing their story down?
• What did they laugh about?
• What frightened them?
• How did they fall in love?
• What happened inside the homes whose addresses disappeared centuries ago?
• What did they teach their children?
• What stories did they carry?
• And what small choices did they make that eventually led, generation after generation, to me?

The people who inspired The Locket and the Ledger were once names in my own research.

The story itself is fiction. The conversations are imagined. The emotions and private moments belong to the world of the novel.

But beneath those imagined moments are real names, real family connections, real places, and the long thread of history that eventually became part of my own bloodline. That is what makes writing this series different for me.

I am not simply inventing a family.  In many ways, I am trying to listen for one.

About the Author

I began researching my family history because I wanted to know where I came from. My messy little brain had a hard time with the repeated names and blocks with lines over many many pages. So I started looking up the background. Where they lived and what life was like for them. What were common ideas, feelings for the times. This was for my own benefit to keep the repeated names on track. Soon I realized that I had a good notebook of information on different century living, different country and society habits and ways.

I did not expect to find a series of stories waiting for me.

The deeper I traveled into my family tree, the more I realized that genealogy gives us the skeleton of a life.

• Names.
• Dates.
• Marriages.
• Places.

But the heart of those lives is often missing. This series is my attempt to imagine the spaces between the records.To take the pieces of history left behind and ask what might have happened between them.

To explore love where the records only show a marriage. To imagine a home where history only gives us a location. To wonder about the dreams of people whose names survived while their voices did not.

Writing The Last Remembered Story allows me to combine two things I love.

• Research and imagination.
